Caesar’s legacy lives on in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, and now fans can see the film in an entirely new light — one unobscured by visual effects. Director Wes Ball’s exciting science fiction adventure dropped on physical formats yesterday (Tuesday, August 27), and the 4K UHD Blu-ray release contains the highly anticipated one-of-a-kind special feature titled “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut.”
Thanks to this innovative version of the movie, which is exclusive to the 4K UHD Blu-ray, die-hard Planet of the Apes enthusiasts can watch the actors’ big-screen performances before any of the special effects were applied. Check out a special look at the footage below with actors Kevin Durand and Owen Teague playing a pivotal scene between Proximus Caesar and Noa respectively:
In a recent interview, Ball touted “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut,” and he thinks those who love the movie-making process are going to truly enjoy this unique special feature. Ball said (per Entertainment Weekly):
"This experience may not appeal to everyone. For those fascinated by the filmmaking process — especially with VFX films like Kingdom — they’re going to freakin' love it. It's a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the cutting edge of modern cinema.”

Wes Ball Believes Fans Will Enjoy ‘Peeking Behind the Curtain of Movie Making’
The mesmerizing special feature included on the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ 4K UHD Blu-ray allows fans to watch the final cut of the film in a split-screen format up against the VFX-less version featuring the actors still performing in their mo-cap suits. Thus, director Wes Ball is giving cinephiles a Wizard of Oz-esque look into the genesis of “Inside the Lens: The Raw Cut.” Ball said during the same sit-down”
"During the year or so spent in post-production, working on more than 1,500 VFX shots, we would frequently compare our VFX works-in-progress with the original footage, ensuring we were getting the details right. I often found myself completely mesmerized by the magic of WetaFX's work and how seamlessly it translated from the raw dailies. Around the latter half of post, it struck me how fantastic it would be to share this experience with fans like myself — those who relish peeking behind the curtain of movie making."
